Desperate
Psalm 63:1-8
O God, you are my God; I earnestly
search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this
parched and weary land where there is no water. I have seen you in your
sanctuary and gazed upon your power and glory. Your unfailing love is better
than life itself; how I praise you! I will praise you as long as I live lifting
up my hands to you in prayer. You satisfy me more than the richest feast. I will praise you with songs of joy. I lie
awake thinking of you, meditating on you through the night because you are my
helper. I sing for joy in the shadow of your wings. I cling to you; your strong
right hand holds me securely.
What does it mean to be desperate for God? What does
it mean to long for Him with our entire being? Our hearts were made to worship
the Creator. We live and move in Him and have our being( Acts 17:28). He is
better than the greatest pleasure. He satisfies our souls. Our greatest need is
God. God desires to fill our parched souls with Himself. To be desperate for
God is to be filled with the knowledge that we are nothing without Him. We are
filled with neediness. We need God for everything, for life, for sustenance,
for joy, for peace, for hope, for salvation. Through Christ,
we have access to God. We can come to Him with our great need for Him. He will
not deny or refuse us. He loves to fulfill us.
The psalmist David knew what it meant to be
desperate for God. Psalm 63 is a heart-cry of total dependence on the Creator. I want to be desperate for God. I want to long for Him more than I long for
anything on earth. For I know that He alone can satiate me. His love is richer and
purer. His promises are Yes and Amen. I want to desire God and long for Him. I
want Him to be my greatest delight.
The more time we spend with Him, in prayer and
meditation on His Word, the more aware we are of our desperate need for Him.
The more we drink from His river of delights, the more we thirst for Him. The
psalmist spent time in prayer and worship of the Creator. He was enamored by
the beauty of God. Nothing else can compare. All the pleasures of this life are
found wanting when we speak of the Giver of Life. David speaks of being awake, thinking about God. I desire that. I desire to just ponder His goodness. To get
close to Him and sit at His feet. He is enough. He is enough
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
I desire You. I long for You. Give me
the desire for You. Help me to cry out for You in total desperation. Fill my soul
with You. Help me to cling to You. Cause me to desire You more than the richest
of feasts. You are all I want. You are Who my soul longs for. Help me to ponder
and meditate on Your Word. Draw me close to You. You are the love that I have been
looking for. Enrapture me in a sweet divine romance. Help me to have Union with
Christ. Holy Spirit, fill me to overflowing. Help me want more and more of
You. All I want is You. Your Presence heals my wounded soul. Lord God, I need You. I am desperate for You. I am desperate
for You. Incline my heart to fear Your name. Incline my heart to draw nearer
and nearer to You, My God. Help our relationship to deepen. Help me to know
You intimately.
In Jesus’ Name I pray
Amen
